“You know what you should make?” My husband said one night. “A fly quilt.” I liked the idea. Flies are all around us, yet rarely do we take the time to observe them up close. In fact, we try to escape them whenever we can. When looking at photographs of shit flies—because that’s how I am—I was surprised by their beauty: their multifaceted shimmering bodies, their big, red, extraterrestrial eyes and their delicate transparent wings. Suddenly, I didn’t want to ever pick up the fly swatter again but instead lean my tired head on their bodies. And so the fly pillow was born. With the exception of the sparkling golden thread lacing their colored bodies, the pillowcase is 100 percent cotton. It is 18 x 18 inches, has a zipper in the back and can be hand-washed and line-dried.
